For the past three months I have visited zoos across the UK to create a unique body of work that illuminates the reality of captivity. Zoo animals are seen by many as a novelty, something exotic to marvel at. For me however, the novelty wore off a long time ago. I only see sadness, loneliness and frustration. I layer, sometimes ten, sometimes hundreds of images, to show people that these animals are real, sentient and more often than not, suffering. I encourage you to sit with my work, decipher the subject and see what I see. These animals deserve better.
